Wer A wie Algarve meint, der muss auch F wie Faro sagen. Denn ein gelungener Bade- und Strandurlaub an Portugals Sonnenküste beginnt meist in Faro, der rund 40.000 Einwohner zählenden Hauptstadt des Distrikts Algarve. Die Algarve ist die südlichste Region Portugals mit einem Küstenabschnitt am Atlantik und einer langen Südküste von Sagres im Westen bis zur spanischen Grenze im Osten. Herrliche Strände, warmes Meerwasser im Sommer und Sonnenschein fast das ganze Jahr über haben die Region zu einem der beliebtesten Ferienziele in Europa gemacht. Die neue Ryanair-Flugverbindung führt direkt von Memmingen zum internationalen Flughafen von Faro und dann weiter zu einem der zahlreichen Strandhotels.

Spuren der arabischen Herrschaft, die bis ins Jahr 1292 dauerte, sieht man überall in der einzigartigen Architektur der Region. Die Temperaturen sind an der Algarve die mildesten des Landes. Im nördlichen Teil liegen die Hügel von Espinhaçao de Cao, Monchique und Caldeirao, die den Küstenstreifen vor heftigen Winden schützen. Diese lichtdurchflutete Region mit ihren Feigen- und Mandelbäumen und den duftenden Orangenhainen ist sehr fruchtbar. An der Südküste entlang reihen sich schöne Sandstrände, die hier und da durch außergewöhnliche Felsformationen unterbrochen werden.

Mit seinem Flughafen dient Faro zwar den meisten Besuchern nur als An- und Abreiseort von und zur Algarve, der aber über eine interessante Altstadt und zahlreiche historische Bauwerke verfügt. Zu den bekannten zählen der Bischofspalast Paço Episcopal, die Kathedrale, die Kirche do Carmo, die Misericórdia-Kirche und das Kloster dos Capuchos. Wer sich vom Stadtbummel erholen möchte, wählt eines der Straßencafes oder den   Stadtpark Alameda Joao de Deus.    

Anyone who associates A with the Algarve also has to associate F with Faro. This is because a great beach holiday in Portugal ’s sunshine coast usually begins in Faro, the capital district of the Algarve district and home to around 40,000 residents. The Algarve is the most southern region in Portugal with a coastline to the Atlantic and a long southern coast stretching from Sagres in the West to the Spanish border in the East. Magnificent beaches, warm seawater in summer and sunshine almost all year round have made the region one of the most popular holiday destinations in Europe . The new Ryanair flight connection flies directly from Memmingen to the international airport of Faro, where holiday-makers can then head off to the numerous beach-front hotels.

The unique architecture of the region illustrates traces of the Arabic rule which lasted until 1292. The temperatures in the Algarve are the mildest in the country. The hills of Espinhaçao de Cao, Monchique und Caldeirao which protect the coastal strips from strong winds, are located in the northern part of the region. This region, which is bathed in light, is very productive, with its fig and almond trees and aromatic orange groves. Beautiful sand beaches, interrupted from time to time by exceptional rock formations, stretch along the South coast.

For most visitors, Faro is usually only a place of arrival and departure to and from the Algarve thanks to its airport. The city itself, however, does have an extremely interesting old town and numerous historical buildings. Some of the most well-known are the Bishop’s Palace Paço Episcopa, the cathedral, the church do Carmo, the Misericórdia church and the monastery dos Capuchos.
